# Nutrition & child outcomes scoreboard (ASEAN-10 + Timor-Leste)

Dedicated **nutrition outcomes** pack for SEA-11 — child anthropometry (stunting / wasting / overweight), anemia in women of reproductive age, and adult overweight / obesity. Companion to `topics/agriculture_food/` (agr VA / yields / **PoU + FIES** food-system lens) and `topics/health_outcomes/` (mortality / UHC) — this pack owns **body outcomes**, not food-system production. **Dual stories:** (1) FAO PoU / FIES ≠ WHO/UNICEF JME stunting/wasting/overweight — separate panels; (2) undernutrition ≠ overweight/obesity (double burden) — never one blended nutrition score.

**As of:** 2026-09-24
**Coverage:** BRN, KHM, IDN, LAO, MYS, MMR, PHL, SGP, THA, VNM, TLS
**Linear:** [MED2-73](https://linear.app/media-os/issue/MED2-73/nutrition-and-child-outcomes-sea-scoreboard-brief-spec)
**Rule:** No invented numbers. Empty cells stay empty. Prefer WDI/JME and WHO GHO primary pulls. PoU/FIES are dual-story cross-checks only (cite agriculture companion; do not duplicate agr VA/yields).

## Indicators

|-----------|------|--------|-----------------|
| `child_stunting_pct` | % under-5 | WDI `SH.STA.STNT.ZS` (JME) | Country survey/model years **2000–2023** (badge year) |
| `child_wasting_pct` | % under-5 | WDI `SH.STA.WAST.ZS` (JME) | Same JME wave |
| `child_overweight_pct` | % under-5 | WDI `SH.STA.OWGH.ZS` (JME) | Same JME wave |
| `anemia_women_pct` | % women 15–49 | WDI `SH.ANM.ALLW.ZS` (WHO) | **2023** SEA-11 |
| `adult_overweight_pct` | % adults BMI≥25 | WDI `SH.STA.OWAD.ZS` (WHO) | **2022** SEA-11 |
| `adult_obesity_pct` | % adults BMI≥30 age-std | WHO GHO `NCD_BMI_30A` | **2024** SEA-11 |
| `undernourishment_pct` | % pop (PoU) | WDI `SN.ITK.DEFC.ZS` (FAO) | **2023** (cross-check; agr companion) |
| `food_insecurity_modsev_pct` | % pop (FIES) | WDI `SN.ITK.MSFI.ZS` (FAO) | **2023**/TLS **2021** (cross-check) |

## Panel rules

| Panel | Metrics | Do not |
|-------|---------|--------|
| **(1) Child undernutrition** | Stunting + wasting | Average with overweight; call PoU “stunting” |
| **(2) Child overweight** | JME overweight under-5 | Blend into adult obesity bars |
| **(3) Anemia (women)** | `anemia_women_pct` | Treat as a child anthropometry substitute |
| **(4) Adult overweight / obesity** | OWAD + NCD_BMI_30A | One blended “nutrition index” with stunting |
| **(5 optional) PoU / FIES dual-story** | Cross-check only | Duplicate agr VA/yields; equate PoU with JME |

## Reading notes

- **Timor-Leste** has the highest child stunting in SEA-11 (**46.7%**, 2020). **Laos** is highest among **2023**-vintage peers (**32.8%**).
- **Philippines** stunting **26.7%** (2021) sits above MY/TH/VN/ID peers on the same recent window (TH lowest peer at **12.4%** 2022).
- **Double burden:** Thailand combines low-ish stunting (**12.4%**) with the highest child overweight among recent peers (**10.9%** 2022) and high adult overweight (**45.7%** 2022).
- **Anemia surprise:** Philippines **12.0%** (2023) is the SEA-11 low — Myanmar **39.7%** and Cambodia **38.0%** lead.
- **PoU ≠ FIES ≠ JME:** Philippines PoU **3.0%** (2023) vs FIES mod+sev **32.9%** (2023) vs stunting **26.7%** (2021) — three different concepts.
- **Singapore / Brunei** child anthropometry are **STALE** (SGP 2000 · BRN 2009) — show adult panels; do not peer-rank child bars without a vintage badge.
- **Site mirror:** `/projects/asean-in-data/` was **not present** on this box at ship — local pack only; skip clone.

## WDI obesity code note

`SH.STA.OB18.ZS` is **not** available in the World Bank API (invalid indicator). Adult obesity uses **WHO GHO `NCD_BMI_30A`** instead.
