# Remittances: received, paid, and economic weight

Three World Bank WDI series are presented independently:

- BX.TRF.PWKR.DT.GD.ZS — personal remittances received, % of GDP.
- BX.TRF.PWKR.CD.DT — personal remittances received, current US$.
- BM.TRF.PWKR.CD.DT — personal remittances paid, current US$.

Personal remittances comprise personal transfers and compensation of employees.
Received means inflows to the reporting economy; paid means outflows. Current
US dollars are nominal, not inflation-adjusted. These data do not measure the
number of migrants, bilateral corridors, transfer fees, or household reach.

`scoreboard.csv` contains one row per SEA-11 country and indicator. It uses the
latest non-null observation within five years of the latest observed year in
the snapshot (2020–2025 for this release). Older-only series remain blank in
this recent comparison; their last observed year/value is in provenance.json.
This six-calendar-year window is a project display rule, not a WDI definition.

`history.csv` contains all returned annual observations from 2000 onward,
including null cells as blanks. It permits exact-year comparison without
carrying earlier observations forward. Dollar values retain original units;
charts alone convert to billions. `source-response.json` preserves the API
response, and `indicator-metadata.json` preserves WDI definitions.

Reproduce with `npm run data:refresh-remittances` (Node and curl required), then
`npm run data:build` and `npm run check:data`. Refreshing is an explicit network
operation; ordinary builds use the committed snapshot and require no API.

The API URL, retrieval date, WDI update date, source SHA-256, and per-series
coverage are in `provenance.json`. World Bank indicator pages identify CC BY
4.0; these upstream terms remain separate from the site's CC BY-SA 4.0.

The original `../remittances_scoreboard.csv` is retained as a legacy supplied
snapshot for reproduction of the original peer card. New topic, chart,
country summary, comparison, and insight views use this expanded WDI pack.
