Insight / Credit & banking

Philippine bank credit sits mid–low at 52% of GDP — far thinner than Thailand, Malaysia or Vietnam — while NPLs remain moderate at about 3%.

Credit depth, physical access points, and asset quality across the SEA-11.

Branch density is peer-typical; ATMs lag Thailand and Malaysia. Don’t confuse credit depth with Findex inclusion. Laos credit/money is 2010 — omit from peer ranking. NPL gaps for Laos, Myanmar and Timor-Leste. Singapore is deep finance with thin branches.

What the comparison shows

Philippine private credit is deeper than Indonesia’s but thinner than the supplied Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam observations. Physical banking access tells a different story: branch density is closer to peers, while ATM density lags some of them. Neither the number of access points nor credit relative to GDP tells us how evenly financial services are distributed.

Key findings from this pack

  • PH credit depth exceeds Indonesia’s but trails Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam’s older observation.
  • PH branch density is close to Thailand’s, while ATM density trails Thailand and Malaysia.
  • Singapore’s thin branch network does not establish shallow banking.
  • Laos credit is critically stale; missing NPLs remain gaps. Credit depth and Findex inclusion are different measures.

The evidence: Philippines and peers

How to interpret the findings

Credit depth is not the same as account ownership or inclusion, and a larger credit ratio is not automatically better. The Laos credit observation is critically stale and unsuitable for a current ranking. Non-performing loan gaps and older observations also limit a uniform assessment of regional bank asset quality.

The table is a comparison of observations, not a combined ranking. The topic guide includes the wider SEA-11 coverage, interactive charts and full methodology.
