Beyond the China+1 headline

Manufacturing value added across the region.

Manufacturing value added and electronics export shares describe different parts of the production story.

What the comparison shows

Manufacturing value added describes how much production contributes to an economy. Electronics export shares describe the composition of trade. An economy can have large gross electronics exports while importing many of the inputs, so the two measures need not tell the same story about domestic production or retained value.

Key findings from this pack

  • Manufacturing value added measures production’s footprint, not gross exports.
  • Electronics export definitions vary by country.
  • Singapore is a hub reference; this selected matrix is not complete SEA-11 coverage.

The evidence: Philippines and peers

Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. Values retain their individual years; missing observations are shown as —.

How to interpret the findings

A cross-sectional manufacturing share does not demonstrate relocation from China. Establishing that would require evidence of changes over time and the origin of investment or production. The selected matrix also has incomplete regional coverage and differing electronics definitions; Singapore’s role as a hub requires separate context.

Coverage and context

The matrix attributes manufacturing values to WDI but omits extraction dates and direct indicator URLs. The WDI link is a definition reference; as_of is the library snapshot. Singapore is a hub reference. Electronics export definitions differ across countries and must not be treated as a harmonized series. Manufacturing share does not establish China+1 causation.

The table is a comparison of observations, not a combined ranking. The topic guide includes the wider SEA-11 coverage, interactive charts and full methodology.
