Insight / Health outcomes

Among its peers, the Philippines has the shortest life expectancy — 69.9 years — and the highest under-five mortality. Measles and DPT coverage are also the weakest of the five.

Longevity, survival, immunisation and health services.

Lead with life expectancy, child survival, and immunization. Don’t claim worst maternal mortality or lowest UHC — Indonesia owns those among peers. Singapore is a ceiling, not a peer.

What the comparison shows

The Philippine weakness is clearest where longevity, child survival and routine immunisation point in the same direction. This is broader than a single low indicator. Yet the Philippines is above Indonesia on the supplied UHC index and has lower maternal mortality, so the evidence supports a specific account of weaknesses rather than an across-the-board last-place claim.

Key findings from this pack

  • PH trails its four peers on longevity, child survival and immunisation in this pack.
  • The same worst-of-five claim does not apply to maternal mortality or UHC.
  • Physician density has mixed observation years and is not a direct quality-of-care measure.

The evidence: Philippines and peers

Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. Values retain their individual years; missing observations are shown as —.

How to interpret the findings

Outcomes, vaccination coverage and service capacity measure different parts of a health system. These comparisons do not isolate the causes of poorer outcomes. Physician density also uses different observation years, and a national average cannot reveal geographic access or the quality of care.

Coverage and context

Read row years and coverage notes; missing observations are not zero.

The table is a comparison of observations, not a combined ranking. The topic guide includes the wider SEA-11 coverage, interactive charts and full methodology.
