Philippine tax take sits mid-pack at 14.4% of GDP — just behind Thailand, ahead of Malaysia and Singapore on the WDI series.
Complements the debt and interest topics — capacity to collect, not how much is owed. Keep WDI tax and IMF GG revenue on separate panels; don’t splice Vietnam, Brunei or Indonesia into the WDI ranking. Timor-Leste’s Petroleum Fund distorts revenue excl grants — exclude from ASEAN-10 means. Myanmar’s 6% is a 2019 caveat.
What the comparison shows
Tax revenue relative to GDP describes the capacity to collect revenue from the economy, complementing debt and interest-burden measures. In the available WDI comparison the Philippines sits behind Thailand and ahead of Malaysia and Singapore. Revenue composition then asks where collections come from, rather than what statutory tax rates households or businesses face.
Key findings from this pack
- Among the same-year WDI observations, PH tax take trails Thailand and exceeds Singapore and Malaysia.
- Missing WDI tax observations remain gaps; IMF general-government revenue is separate context.
- Income and goods-and-services tax shares describe revenue composition, not statutory tax rates.
- Myanmar’s older observation and Timor-Leste’s Petroleum Fund require explicit country context.

How to interpret the findings
IMF general-government revenue is broader than the WDI tax series and cannot fill its gaps in a single ranking. Timor-Leste’s Petroleum Fund also changes the interpretation of revenue excluding grants. The Myanmar observation is older, and the missing WDI cells mean the available comparison is not a complete regional tax ranking.

The table is a comparison of observations, not a combined ranking. The topic guide includes the wider SEA-11 coverage, interactive charts and full methodology.
