Key findings from this pack

  • Received US dollars show the size of inflows; the GDP share shows their economic weight.
  • Paid remittances are a separate outward flow, not another measure of receipts.
  • The Philippines receives much more than it pays in the matched 2025 observations.
  • Recent comparisons omit historical-only series; annual history preserves them with their years.

Methods & coverage

Three measures, two directions

Personal remittances combine household transfers with compensation of employees under the World Bank’s balance-of-payments definition. Received series describe inflows to the reporting economy; paid describes outflows. Neither is a count of migrants or a bilateral corridor measure.

The GDP share describes economic weight. Current-US-dollar amounts describe nominal volume and are displayed in billions. They are not adjusted for inflation. The USD series are fetched directly from WDI, not estimated from the GDP share.

Recent comparisons and historical coverage

The snapshot was retrieved on 2026-09-09; WDI reports a source update of 2026-07-13. The latest observed year is 2025. Our recent view takes each series’ latest non-missing observation within 2020–2025. This is an explicit project freshness rule; it does not imply same-year coverage. Select a specific year to compare only that year, without carrying older values forward.

Malaysia and Laos end in 2024. Singapore has no observations in this window. Brunei has no received observations and its paid series ends in 2009; Vietnam’s received and paid series end in 2004 and 2014 respectively; Myanmar ends in 2019. Historical-only observations remain available in year selection and annual history, but are not ranked as recent values. The coverage file records each series’ last observed value and year.

Reading and reusing the data

Do not subtract differently dated received and paid values to construct a net flow. These aggregates do not reveal household reach, transfer costs or sender destinations, and recorded flows may omit informal channels. The original supplied GDP-share snapshot is retained for reproduction of the older peer card; the expanded topic, profiles and comparison use this WDI retrieval.
